Considering scent in interior design adds an often overlooked but compelling dimension to the overall experience of a space. It is one of the reasons why I decided to create a very special scent just for the shop and New England Home & Interiors. I wanted to capture the essence of the places where I design, which means encapsulating the entirety of the White Mountain region of Northern New England.
My candle scent, arriving soon as notes of lavender, cedar, and smoke!
When I set out to create the scent with Alicia, owner of Aerengais, I wanted to bring forth the emotions that most embody mountain life. For me, the serenity and calm come from not only the visual beauty of the mountains but also the natural smells around us all year. I can't wait to share it with you.
Here's what makes it interesting to me and some things to think about when embarking on infusing scent into your spaces.
Emotional Impact: Scent has a direct link to our emotions and memories. A carefully chosen scent can evoke specific feelings, nostalgia, or comfort, enhancing the overall ambiance of a room. For example, the smell of lavender can promote relaxation, while citrus scents can invigorate.
Creating Themes: Scent can reinforce a particular theme or style within a space. As with my scent and the scent notes in my candle, various trees and florals play a role in the immersive scent of living in the mountains.
Wellness and Well-being: Certain scents are associated with health benefits. Aromatherapy is a well-known practice that uses fragrances to improve mental and physical well-being. Integrating this into interior design can help create a healthier and more relaxed atmosphere.
Memory and Connection: Scent can create lasting memories and emotional connections. People often remember spaces, people, or places based on their distinct smells. In interior design, this can be used to create memorable and meaningful environments.
Complementing Other Design Elements: Scent can complement design elements such as color, texture, and lighting to create a more holistic sensory experience. It can tie together the various aspects of a space and enhance its overall appeal. Consider adding scent as your last layer of design.
Incorporating scent into interior design, whether through natural elements like plants and flowers, scented candles, diffusers, or built-in scent systems, allows the occupants of the space to connect on a deeper sensory level, making spaces more inviting, memorable, and emotionally resonant.
